EMDI Akure, Nigeria

Collaboration

Since its inception the Institute has successfully fulfilled its mandate in the area of collaboration with relevant government agencies, private sector and tertiary Institutions.

Education Trust Fund (ETF) 2002 and 2003 Intervention
The Institute worked with ETF in its foundry technology program for higher institutions by refurbishing and rehabilitating foundries and foundry equipment in selected tertiary Institutions across the nation. This led to the provision of complete set of Rotary Furnaces in some Institutions, as designed and developed by EMDI.
The ETF provided the Institute (EMDI) with Foundry Technology Education Centre, a 150kg Twin Pole Induction furnace and other foundry related equipment for training the trainers in foundry technology.

Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO)
Makes available its Advanced Materials Characterization equipment that are not available at EMDI and also collaborates with EMDI in the area of Nanotechnology.

Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) Waste to Wealth Project
The major collaboration of the council with EMDI is in the research area of Surface Strengthening of Ferrous Materials (Pack Cyaniding) using cassava wastes (aka Cassava Waste to Engineering Wealth). This research work is to develop strengthened ferrous surface components with improved wear and tear capabilities which will lead to the development of technologies required for the production of machine component and spares with improved properties.

Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (SMEDAN)
Utilization of EMDI’s workshop for manufacturing and fabrication of engineering components.

Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI)
Design and Development of Motorized Twin Mould Interlocking Earth Brick Making Machine.

National Board for Technology Incubation, Akure Centre
The Institute works closely with the Akure Incubation Centre in assisting ‘Incubatees’ whenever the need arises.

Hydraulic Equipment Development Institute (HEDI)-Kano
The Institute (EMDI) assisted HEDI-Kano in pattern making of water pump body and other pump parts, mark ‘4’ hand pump type.

National Engineering Design and Development Institute (NEDDI)-Nnewi
EMDI collaborates with NEDDI in the area of engineering design and reverse engineering.

National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI)
There is extensive collaboration with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) in Advanced Manufacturing Technology and infrastructural development. The Agency is also committed to the continuing development of the Nanotechnology Initiative with the full involvement of EMDI in the area of nano-electronics and nano-structured materials. NASENI also works closely with EMDI in the development of Salt Bath Furnaces, and the advancement of the ADI technology using the rotary furnace. NASENI in conjuction with EMDI recently designed, developed and fabricated an 8-Mould Interlocking Brick Making Machine.

Ultra Brain Technology Nig. Ltd
Collaboration in the area of design and development of spin coater.

 US-Africa Materials Institute (USAMI)
EMDI is in partnership with USAMI in the areas of Advanced Materials Research activities especially in Nanotechnology, Organic Electronics, Light Emitting Devices, Solar Cell, Austempered Ductile Iron, Material Characterization, and Advanced Foundry Technology.

Materials Society of Nigeria (MSN)
A professional body in collaboration with EMDI in the area of Materials Science and Engineering. This is more or less the Nigerian version of Materials Research Society.

West Africa Materials Research Society (WA-MRS)
A professional body in collaboration with EMDI in the area of Materials Science and Engineering. This is West African version of Materials Research Society.

Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory
The laboratory is ready to make available to EMDI its Materials Testing equipment not available in the Institute and vice versa.

Ondo State Ministry of Lands and Environment
The Institute assisted the Ondo State Ministry of Lands and Environment in providing Engineering Audit for the state’s Integrated Waste Management Plant and was involved in the refurbishment of its Organic Fertilizer Recycling Plant for optimum performance.

The African Renaissance Institute of Science and Technology (ARIST)
Advanced research activities on fabrication of solar cells for the provision of alternative source of energy.

Tertiary Institutions

Several institutions of higher learning and the industry use EMDI’s laboratories, characterization and testing equipment and library facilities as essential part of their teaching, research and learning. The Institute also accepts students on Industrial Training from Polytechnics, Universities and National Youth Service Corp members.
